dangly balls, orchestral maneuvers and wtf?
i'd forgotten---kitten + christmas trees = fail. jasper the rescued kitty thinks i've just put two ginormous toys filled with balls and dangly things in the house for him to play with. when i came home yesterday he was IN.THE.TREE. i tried squirting him w/ water. ha. he laughs in the face of water. the hubs warned me when we were putting up the tree, "don't put anything that you don't want broken on the tree this year." hmph. i didn't put "our" ornament on. (it's a hand blown glass ornament he bought me when we were dating 500 yrs ago) and i didn't put the ornament from my grandma's tree on it. the hubs also reminded me that rebel and meow also attacked the trees their first christmas. rebel actually used to sit in the boughs of the tree years and years ago. i'm old. i'd forgotten the damage kitties can dish out. the trees have no hope i fear.
last night we went to the girl's holiday performance. she's taking beginning orchestra this year, playing the viola. i was prepared for screeching but in all honesty they weren't half bad. i still get a little verklempt when i see my kids perform anything. i was so proud.
and you think I'M weird? check out this post from the boy's blog:
i don't even know what that means?!
and this is from the girl's blog:
notice she also does not use caps? i thought, cool, she takes after me. then she explained it's because they haven't gotten to the caps key in keyboarding yet : ) he he
now, my dilemma is that the kids know i have a blog but hello---there's no way in hell i'd let them read it. i'm going to have to think about this because while i don't think the boy will figure it out, i'm sure the girl eventually will and there's just stuff she doesn't need to read. quite a dilemma.

i measure up
don't you hate it when you know you've kicked ass on a project at work and you don't get credit for it? or, just in the over all day to day life crap you sometimes feel unappreciated (ESPECIALLY if you're a parent)? well, i totally got appreciated in blog land--again--by sherendipity. i heart her. and if we ever go to canada (because the boy has weird thoughts about the country and canuckistans, like they're martians or something. it all goes back to the fact that he's stuck on canadian bacon not really being bacon. i know, i don't get it either.) i'm totally hanging out with her whether she likes it or not. : )
so, here's my cool award---feel free to be jealous ; )

it's a manly award, created by what i'm sure are manly bloggers. i think they got tired of all the flowery, pink, rainbow and unicorn awards floating around--not that those aren't precious and to die for--but, you know, they needed a masculine award to pass out. so, my blog measures up. he he. and here i haven't even had any tmi or sexual posts lately. wow.
when this is bestowed upon you, you have to do the following:
1. Say one nice thing to a man in your life.
just one? hmmmmm....not to be corny, but...he completes me. he fills in my gaps (get it, gaps?) and understands me; he's also a better cook, better at math homework (thank god or both kids would be up shit creek), a better duster and he can be incredibly sweet. oh, and he's my best friend.
2. List at least six ways that you measure success in your life (or for your blog).
this is tough because i'm not very goal oriented.
success to me is knowing my kids know i love them and that they aren't afraid to talk to me and they enjoy being with me; it's when i get through the day without freaking out about something and going over to the crazy side; it's knowing that even if i do go to the crazy side the hubs knows i love him; it's mostly keeping all the balls in the air and not freaking out too much if i drop one; it's knowing that i know in my heart, regardless of how bad things get, there's no where else the hubs would rather be; and for the blog---hello, it's comments and lurve : )
3. Assign this award to six other blogs and leave them a comment telling the blogger that you’ve assigned them this award.
1. Astarte at The Muddled Sage
2. Kristin at Kristin's Four Kids
3. Broad at Broad Minded
4. Just at Just Some Thoughts
5. Aunt Bea (NOT!) at This Wonderful, Crazy Life
ok, that's 5 not 6 but i don't really feel like i KNOW any other bloggers well enough to go bestowing awards on them just yet. i lurk (yes, i admit it) on some w/out commenting and randomly comment on a few others. and some of the others i comment on i feel funny awarding because they don't respond (in comments or email) to my comments (or anyone else's i assume) so i kinda feel all weird. do you know what i mean? like i'm butting in on the cool kids' conversation like some nerdy nerd nerd and trying to add my two cents and they're all rolling their eyes and shaking their long gorgeous hair while wearing their cheerleading uniforms. ahem...ok, got lost in a little insecurity there.
*******
ok, i need help on something else. i want to do a holiday meme thingy (feel free to be amazed at my awesome use of tech terms). it's easy peasy. i'd have this little award-type button (but it's not an award) for the holidays and you tag other bloggers with it. when tagged you have to post a picture of your christmas tree and then pass the tag along. what do you think? is that totally cheesy? so, the thing i need help with is creating the button thing, cos god knows i don't have a clue how to do that. any suggestions? anyone? bueller? bueller?

on a lighter note
traditions--we has em. we have lots of traditions in our family and i've realized lately that the boy loves this. he loves traditions. he doesn't like to change traditions. for example, we (being my folks, grandma and brother/sister and their families) have christmas eve at our house every year. well, for the last six years anyway since we've been in this house. i've casually mentioned changing venues to the kids and they are opposed to it.
what else? in the last few years we've put up two trees; one bigger one w/ multi-color lights in the den and a smaller, white-light tree in the living room. this is the tree santa visits (the boy still be lives in santa).
we hide a pickle ornament (a german tradition. whichever kid finds it gets a little something extra).
we have advent calendars (and i get one for my nieces and nephews). we decorate sugar cookies.
our favorite things are watching the little drummer boy; all the bass & rankin classics; the sound of music; snowmen decorations all over the place; gingerbread men (the boy went through a phase where he was obsessed w/ them; last year it was nutcrackers) and christmas music.
***********
i have to say that yesterday the girl really touched my heart. although she was upset about rebel, she was always by my side trying to comfort me. afterwards she came and sat by me on my bed and put my head on her shoulder and patted me and hugged me. it was the sweetest thing.
tonight, both kids have entered blogworld. they have invitation-only sites. i'll be curious to see how this works out. they know the rules, no personal stuff, no details, etc., plus people have to be invited to read them and they aren't searchable by blogger or google.

goodbye old friend
although i knew this day was coming it was harder than i imagined. my cat, rebel, died last night around 8 o'clock.
you'd think i would have been more prepared. he was 17. he was decrepit. he'd been having more and more bad days; days were he seemed confused, lethargic (as compared to just napping a lot) and unsteady on his feet.
saturday the hubs picked him up and brought him to bed with us. sunday morning the girl went looking for her cat and brought rebel out to me, saying he couldn't walk. she laid him on the chair, and honestly i didn't really put two and two together at that point.
from there it went down hill. the hubs and i took turns holding him all day yesterday. he moved only slightly, seeming totally drained of energy. the life was slipping out of him. the kids held him a few times and throughout the day each of the other pets, at one time or another, came up to him and either nuzzled or licked him or just sat on our lap w/ him. he was saying his goodbyes.
then he just slipped away.
i expected to be upset when he finally died, but i didn't realize how hard it would hit us, especially since we knew it was coming. last night was the first night in 17 years that i didn't have a skinny, long-haired gray cat sleeping on me. this morning was the first time in years that the hubs took a shower without a gray cat meowing at him to get in and turn the water on so he could stand on the side between the curtains and drink from the faucet.
this is the first time since i was in college that i don't have a pet. yes, we have four other animals, but the dogs have claimed the hubs, the girl has her cat and the new kitty is a free spirit and hasn't claimed one of us as his own.
my first pet was a runt beagle puppy, chloe. i got her the summer i graduated from college (1990). when she first met the hubs and we moved in w/ him she wouldn't look at him, but that quickly changed and she became as much his dog as mine. when we moved to nc and got our own little house we got rebel, who was a tiny gray ball of fuzz named smokey. the hubs named him rebel. he and chloe were best buddies; really the only other animal rebel ever befriended. chloe would let him nurse on her when he was a kitten. they curled up together to take naps.
we had to put chloe to sleep five years ago and that about killed both the hubs and i. she was my baby before i had babies. and now, her long-time friend, our long-time friend, is also gone. we'll bury him this afternoon, in the backyard, beside chloe.
